There are a number of traditional ingredients that have been used in hair products for years but research has shown can actually do more harm than good. The three which are most talked about are sulphates, sodium chloride and parabens – we will look at the role these ingredients play in products, the effect they have in your hair, and the benefits of removing them from your haircare regime.
What are sulphates?
Sulphates are a chemical foaming agent, and a common ingredient in cleaning products that require surfactants. They are excellent for creating foam in shampoo, and providing that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling that so many people look for in their shampoo. However, they achieve this by stripping the natural oils out of hair and generally acting as an abrasive on the hair and scalp. Because of this they can act as an irritant and cause redness, itchiness and even swelling whilst also stripping moisture and colour out of the hair shaft. This is also the reason why you can’t use sulphate shampoos after Keratin-smoothing treatments, as they literally strip the protective, smoothing agents out of the hair. Using a sulphate-free shampoo removes irritation and helps to prevent premature colour fade.
Why is sodium chloride bad for my hair?
Sodium chloride is more commonly known as table salt, and is commonly used in shampoos containing sulphates as a thickening agent. Just as eating lots of salty snacks can make your thirsty, salt has the same effect on your scalp and hair, leaving it feeling dry and brittle. Removing this ingredient from your products is a quick and easy way to help hair retain moisture.
Should I avoid parabens?
Parabens have been used in cosmetic products since the 1950s as a preservative. They are fairly ‘transparent’ within the hair and can be easily rinsed out, however there are many people who prefer not to use preservatives of this nature in their hair if they can be avoided.
